What does greatness actually look like in the Kingdom of God? In Luke 9, Matthew 18, and Mark 9, the disciples begin arguing about which of them will be the greatest. After everything they had seen and experienced with Jesus, they were still concerned with recognition, importance, and authority. Jesus responds by placing a young child before them. The disciples wanted to know how to become great. Jesus tells them they first need to become humble. Like a child who depends upon and trusts a parent, Christ’s followers must learn to depend upon Him rather than trying to elevate themselves above others. That lesson becomes even more important when John tells Jesus that they stopped someone from casting out demons simply because he was not part of their group. Jesus corrects them again: **“For he that is not against us is on our part.”** Serving God is not a competition. We should not become so concerned with our own recognition that we discourage faithful believers who are also serving Christ. Jesus then gives a serious warning about causing one of His “little ones” to stumble. Pride, selfishness, and judgmental attitudes can damage other believers, and God takes that seriously. But the passage also gives tremendous comfort. Jesus compares Himself to a shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to pursue the one sheep that has wandered away. When one of His followers stumbles, Christ does not simply abandon them. He seeks them, values them, and desires to restore them. The disciples were focused on being the greatest. Jesus wanted them to become servants. So we must ask ourselves: **Are we serving God to bring glory to Him, or are we serving Him to bring attention to ourselves?** **God wants you to know that those who serve Him must do so in humility, because in God’s Kingdom greatness isn’t measured by how many people serve you, but by how willing you are to serve others.** 📖 Scripture: Luke 9:46–50; Matthew 18; Mark 9
